Despite what the name suggests, Eagles of Death Metal have nothing to do with death metal, and that's exactly the point. The Palm Desert duo of Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme cooked up a sound they once described as bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals, and somehow it works brilliantly. Homme rarely shows up to play live, being busy with Queens of the Stone Age, so Hughes fronts the touring band and brings a famously wild energy to every show. Their debut Peace, Love, Death Metal landed in 2004 and immediately started turning up in TV commercials, film trailers and video game soundtracks, from Gran Turismo 4 to Guitar Hero 5. The second album Death by Sexy kept that momentum going, with tracks landing in Need for Speed and True Blood, and a memorable incident where Axl Rose called them Pigeons of Shit Metal from the stage, a phrase they promptly slapped on a T shirt. Their fourth album Zipper Down followed in 2015.
