About
Ekaterina Levental is a mezzo soprano and harpist whose work sits at the crossroads of Russian Romantic repertoire and deeply personal storytelling. In her theatrical concert programme "Voorbij de Grenzen" (Beyond the Borders), she performs songs by Tchaikovsky, Medtner and Rachmaninoff, weaving her own spoken narratives between the music. The programme includes well known pieces such as Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, Tchaikovsky's None but the Lonely Heart, and arias from the operas Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades. She collaborates with pianist Frank Peters, and the piano is treated as a full equal in the performance rather than a backing instrument, reflecting the fact that both Rachmaninoff and Medtner were themselves piano virtuosos. Levental came to the Netherlands as a refugee from Uzbekistan, formerly part of the Soviet Union, over thirty years ago, and that journey shapes the personal dimension of her storytelling on stage.
