About
Performing as Elmer, Dutch artist Merel Pauw built a whole persona around a suit, a stick on moustache, and an unflinching way with a lyric. Her debut single "Je vader" drew on Miami bass and a deliberately over the top hook, and she made the whole debut EP Ekster at home on Logic Pro during the first COVID lockdown. From that lo fi starting point she picked up a collaborator in producer Steven Ivo, and the sound grew into something sharper and more adventurous across the EPs Nothing ontploffing and Elmers. Last minute slots at Lowlands and Pukkelpop in 2023 landed to strong reviews, and she also won the Zonneprijs from indie platform Indiestad that same year. Her 2024 album platland marked a step up in scale. Elmer's music spans cheeky wordplay, sharp social observation, and a genuine curiosity about what genre can do, all filtered through a persona that treats gender as performance rather than fixed identity.
