About
Spinvis is the project name of Erik de Jong, a Dutch musician who sent a three song demo to indie label Excelsior Recordings in 2001 and had a record deal within two weeks. Those songs, recorded on a home computer in his attic, became his self titled debut album, released in 2002. The mix of carefully arranged lo fi pop and striking, poetic lyrics turned it into a cult hit, and both that debut and the live album Nieuwegein aan Zee were certified Gold in the Netherlands. Since then, Spinvis has built a catalogue of five top ten albums in the Netherlands, capped by 7.6.9.6. hitting number one on the Dutch Albums Chart. In 2007 he was awarded the Popprijs, the annual prize for the most important contribution to Dutch pop music. His most recent album, Be bop a lula, arrived in 2023, taking its title from the Gene Vincent exclamation and carrying the idea that some phrases mean everything to one person and nothing to another.
