Emanuel Ax, known to friends as Manny, is one of the most consistently compelling classical pianists working today, and his decades long duo partnership with cellist Yo Yo Ma is the stuff of legend. The two have been performing together since 1973 and have recorded much of the cello and piano repertoire side by side. Ax also played in a quartet with Ma, Isaac Stern and Jaime Laredo until Stern's death in 2001, leaving behind Sony recordings of Brahms, Fauré, Beethoven, Schumann and Mozart. What sets Ax apart is his genuine enthusiasm for contemporary music. He has given world premieres of piano concertos by John Williams and John Adams, and championed works by Christopher Rouse, Bright Sheng, Arnold Schoenberg and others alongside the standard repertoire. He has been on the Juilliard faculty since 1990, and in 2012 was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
