Memphis guitarist Eric Gales, also known as Raw Dawg, plays a right handed guitar upside down, a quirk inherited from learning the instrument from his left handed brother. The result is a style that draws comparisons to Jimi Hendrix while remaining unmistakably his own, rooted in blues rock with serious muscle behind it. He landed rock radio hits in the early 90s, shared a Woodstock stage with Carlos Santana, and has racked up 19 albums across a career that has taken him from Elektra Records to tribute tours and Memphis rap collaborations with Three 6 Mafia. His 2022 album Crown, produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, marks a real peak: it debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Blues Album chart and earned Gales his first Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. The record deals honestly with his struggles with substance abuse alongside a hard won sobriety. He also played on two tracks for the Ryan Coogler film Sinners, released in 2025.
