About

Also known as: Flamin Groovies, The, Flaming Groovies, Flamin’ Groovies, The, The Flamin’ Groovies

Few bands walked the line between raw rock energy and pure pop melody as naturally as the Flamin' Groovies. Formed in San Francisco in 1965, they spent years building a cult reputation before landing on what many consider their definitive statement: the 1976 single and album title track 'Shake Some Action', a power pop anthem so good that critic Greil Marcus devoted a chapter to it in his book The History of Rock and Roll in Ten Songs. Produced by Dave Edmunds at Rockfield Studios in Wales, the record showed a band fully committed to the British Invasion sound they loved. The Groovies were ahead of the curve in more ways than one. Punk historians regularly cite them as forerunners of the genre, and their early 1970s work on Kama Sutra, particularly 'Teenage Head', drew a flattering comparison from Mick Jagger to the Rolling Stones' 'Sticky Fingers'. After splitting in 1991 and a couple of limited reunions, the core 1970s lineup got things going again in 2013 and released 'Fantastic Plastic' in 2017.
