About
Also known as: Flotsam & Jetsam, Flotsam And Jetsam
Flotsam and Jetsam have been grinding out thrash metal from Phoenix, Arizona since 1981, long enough to have launched Jason Newsted's career before he left to join Metallica in 1986. With vocalist Eric "A.K." Knutson as the one constant through countless lineup shifts, the band built a solid reputation as part of the second wave of thrash alongside Sepultura, Testament and Death Angel. Their debut, Doomsday for the Deceiver, made history as the first album to score a 6K rating in Kerrang!, which tells you something about the weight they carried early on. Over sixteen studio albums, they have kept the heavy metal flag flying without compromise. No Place for Disgrace from 1988 and When the Storm Comes Down from 1990 both cracked the Billboard 200, with the latter earning heavy MTV rotation for "Suffer the Masses". The band's name itself comes from a chapter in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which feels fitting for a group with this kind of mythological staying power in the metal world.
