About
Metal Church have been one of the most resilient forces in American heavy metal since forming in 1980, and guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof has been the constant behind it all, even after stepping away from live performance in 1986 to focus purely on writing. The band helped shape the Seattle metal scene and left fingerprints on thrash, speed and power metal alike. Their self titled 1984 debut sold 70,000 copies independently before Elektra came calling, and The Dark followed in 1986 with MTV airplay and tours alongside Metallica, King Diamond, Celtic Frost and all four members of the Big Four of thrash. The band has cycled through several lineups and three breakups, with vocalists David Wayne and Mike Howe both leaving deep marks on their sound across multiple stints. Howe's death in July 2021 hit hard, and his replacement Marc Lopes appeared on the 2023 album Congregation of Annihilation. By 2025 the lineup had shifted again, bringing in original Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, drummer Ken Mary of Fifth Angel and Flotsam and Jetsam, and new vocalist Brian Allen.
