About
Also known as: Lips
Few bands have a story quite like Anvil's. The Toronto heavy metal veterans spent the 1980s laying groundwork that bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax would later build careers on, yet by the 1990s they had slipped into near total obscurity, playing gigs to empty rooms while refusing to quit. That stubborn persistence became the subject of the 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by former roadie Sacha Gervasi, which Rolling Stone called the year's most praised rock doc. The film put them back on the map almost overnight, landing them opening slots with AC/DC and appearances at major festivals. At the core of it all are founding members guitarist and vocalist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, who have kept the band going since 1978. Their 1982 album Metal on Metal remains a touchstone of early heavy metal, and by 2024 the band had reached twenty studio albums. Lemmy once asked Kudlow to join Motörhead, and Kudlow turned it down. That kind of commitment to Anvil, through decades of setbacks, pretty much tells you everything about who these guys are.
