About
Few vocalists defined the sound of progressive metal quite like Geoff Tate did fronting Queensrÿche through their commercial peak. The band's 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime and the 1990 follow up Empire were landmark releases that helped shift heavy metal into more ambitious, theatrically minded territory, and Tate's voice was central to that identity. The band moved over 20 million albums worldwide across their run together. His split from Queensrÿche in 2012 was anything but quiet, involving physical altercations, dueling lawsuits, and two bands simultaneously touring under the same name for nearly two years. When the legal dust settled in 2014, Tate walked away with the rights to the Operation: Mindcrime name, which he then adopted for his next band. Hit Parader placed him fourteenth on their list of the 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists of All Time, and That Metal Show's audience voted him the second best hard rock vocalist of the entire 1980s.
