Queensrÿche built their reputation on ambitious, layered progressive metal at a time when most of their peers were content to stay in simpler territory. The Bellevue, Washington band spent the 1980s stacking up landmark records, from the heavy debut The Warning through to Operation: Mindcrime in 1988, a concept album so well constructed that it is still regularly cited as one of the greatest in heavy metal. Empire followed in 1990 and brought them their widest audience yet, largely thanks to the sweeping ballad Silent Lucidity. They have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, survived a very public and legally messy split with longtime vocalist Geoff Tate in 2012, and came out the other side still recording. Todd La Torre stepped in as lead singer and the band has kept moving, releasing Condition Hüman, The Verdict, and Digital Noise Alliance with him at the mic. Founding members Michael Wilton, Scott Rockenfield and Eddie Jackson hold the trademark, and the band continues to put out new material.
