Gigi Perez wrote "Sailor Song" as an acoustic queer ballad about a woman who looked like Anne Hathaway, and somehow that very specific idea turned into a chart topper. The track went viral on TikTok, peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, and hit number one in Ireland, Latvia, and the United Kingdom. Before that breakthrough, she had built a following with raw, emotionally direct songwriting, going viral in 2021 with "Celene" and "Sometimes (Backwood)", which led to a deal with Interscope Records and the 2023 EP How to Catch a Falling Knife. That EP pulled its title from a stock market warning, which she felt captured exactly what she had poured into those eight songs. She has shared stages with Coldplay, Hozier, Noah Kahan, and Girl in Red, and released her debut studio album At the Beach, in Every Life through Island Records in 2025.
