Few pianists bridge the worlds of Cuban rhythmic tradition and jazz harmony as fluidly as Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Born in Havana and coming from a deeply musical family, he built his early reputation touring with Orquesta Aragón before forming his own Grupo Projecto in 1985. His recordings for Blue Note through the 1990s, including Discovery: Live at Montreux and The Blessing, put him firmly on the international jazz map and showed off a technique that is both technically ferocious and genuinely lyrical. Over the decades Rubalcaba has kept restless company, recording alongside Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette and Chick Corea, among others. Three Grammy wins and twelve nominations tell part of the story, but the real draw is how naturally he moves between solo piano introspection, trio settings and larger ensemble work. His 2021 album Skyline with Carter and DeJohnette and the 2023 release Borrowed Roses show he has lost none of that creative drive.
