Out of The Hague and riding the new wave of the late 1970s, Gruppo Sportivo built a reputation on sharp, funny pop songs that winked at musical conventions without ever losing the hook. Frontman Hans Vandenburg wrote the bulk of the material, and the band's live shows were known for slapstick and situational comedy as much as for the tunes. Their best known song, "Beep Beep Love", got traction in both the UK and the US, and UK trade paper Radio and Records named them Top Newcomer in 1978. Songs like "Hey Girl", "Tokyo (I'm On My Way)" and "Disco Really Made It" became nederpop classics, and their first two albums, 10 Mistakes and Back to 78, remain the core of their legacy. The band went through several breakups and reunions over the decades, shifting their strongest fanbase to Germany, Italy and Spain during the early 1980s. A wall of Voodoo cover of "Mexican Radio" brought them back into focus in 1988, and they kept releasing new material well into the 2000s. After a hiatus that started in 2013, a full reunion came in 2018 with the album Great, which landed to solid reviews. In 2022 they returned with the Spotify Tour, playing their 25 most streamed songs in reverse order.
