Fischer Z built their reputation the old fashioned way, through relentless touring and a sound that blended punk urgency with sharp, literate songwriting. The British rock group, centred on singer and guitarist John Watts, broke through after BBC DJ John Peel championed their debut single 'Remember Russia', leading to slots on Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test. Their 1981 album Red Skies Over Paradise was their commercial peak, and singles like 'Marliese' and 'So Long' found audiences across Europe. The band shared stages with James Brown, toured alongside The Police and Dire Straits, and appeared on Bob Marley's final European festival tour. Watts dissolved the original lineup in 1981 but has kept the Fischer Z name alive ever since, releasing records in wildly different modes, from politically charged rock to multimedia projects built on field recordings gathered across Europe. Joint recordings with Peter Gabriel, Steve Cropper and Dexys Midnight Runners give a sense of how wide his creative net has been cast. More than 26 albums and around 4,000 concerts later, Fischer Z released the EP Choose in 2020, followed by Til The Oceans Overflow in 2021 and the band album Triptych shortly after.
