About
Twin sisters Lisa Kaindé and Naomi Diaz make music together as Ibeyi, a French duo whose sound pulls from Yoruba folk traditions, Afro Cuban rhythms, jazz, and electronic production in ways that feel genuinely singular. Lisa sings lead and plays piano while Naomi handles the cajón and batá drum, instruments she picked up after the death of their father, the celebrated Cuban percussionist Anga Díaz. They sing in English, French, Spanish, and Yoruba, and that spiritual connection to their roots runs through everything they do, including nods to Santería across their recordings. Signed to XL Recordings in 2013, their self titled 2015 debut was built almost entirely with label owner Richard Russell and stands as a tribute to their late father. Their 2017 follow up Ash landed a nomination for IMPALA's European Album of the Year. Along the way they appeared in Beyoncé's Lemonade visual album, and their influences range from Frank Ocean and James Blake to King Krule.
