Few rappers have carved out a lane quite like Ice T, who helped define West Coast gangsta rap while also co founding one of heavy metal's most provocative acts. Born Tracy Lauren Marrow, he landed a deal with Sire Records in 1987 and dropped Rhyme Pays, kicking off a run of records that includes Power, the only one of his solo albums to go platinum, and the critically loved O.G. Original Gangster from 1991. That same record introduced the world to Body Count, the heavy metal band he co founded, whose self titled debut sparked a national controversy with the track "Cop Killer" and eventually led Ice T to split from Warner Bros. Since 2000 he has played NYPD detective Odafin Tutuola on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, a role that has made him the longest running male series actor in American TV history. Body Count never really went away either, and their eighth studio album Merciless landed in 2024.
