Few Dutch musicians have matched Jan Akkerman's run in the early seventies, when his band Focus turned heads worldwide with the wildly unpredictable "Hocus Pocus" and the more delicate "Sylvia". Focus II and Focus 3 both went gold in the US, and in 1973 Melody Maker readers voted Akkerman the best guitarist in the world, ahead of John McLaughlin, Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore. That kind of recognition, for a Dutch artist at the height of British and American rock dominance, was almost unheard of. After leaving Focus he kept things interesting rather than standing still. His solo album Tabernakel showed off his lute playing, while Eli, recorded with vocalist Kaz Lux, won the Dutch Edison Award and featured a 12 string guitar tuned in parallel fifths. He has worked alongside an impressive range of players including Paco de Lucía, Jack Bruce, B.B. King and Phil Collins, and kept releasing records well into the 2000s. His 2019 album Close Beauty shows he never really slowed down.
