Joey Baron is the drummer David Bowie once said made metronomes shake in fear, which tells you pretty much everything about his reputation. Based in New York since 1982, he built his name through relentless collaboration across the jazz spectrum, from swinging sessions with Carmen McRae and Al Jarreau on the West Coast to free and avant garde territory at downtown New York's Knitting Factory. His long partnership with guitarist Bill Frisell and his years inside John Zorn's projects Naked City and Masada put him at the center of the experimental jazz scene. Baron also recorded with Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, and Laurie Anderson, and contributed to Bowie's ambitious 1995 album Outside. That kind of range, comfortable in straight ahead jazz one moment and full on avant garde the next, is what keeps his name appearing on records that matter.
