About

Toronto Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Jonathan Crow called Kerson Leong not just one of Canada's greatest violinists but one of the greatest, full stop. The Ottawa born player has earned that kind of praise through a career built on serious competition wins, high profile premieres, and a solo discography that keeps attracting top tier critical notices. His 2021 recording of Ysaÿe's Six Sonatas for Solo Violin on Alpha Classics picked up a Diapason d'Or, and his Britten and Bruch concerto disc with the Philharmonia Orchestra landed a Gramophone Editor's Choice and a Strad Recommends. He plays a 1741 ex Bohrer Guarneri del Gesu, one of the most storied instrument types in the violin world. Leong has a particular connection to new music written specifically for him. English composer John Rutter created Visions for Leong to premiere at the Temple Church in London, and he has since taken it to Carnegie Hall, St. Paul's Cathedral, Australia, and Hong Kong. He spent four years as artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, working under Augustin Dumay, and also served as artist in residence with the Orchestre Métropolitain. On YouTube his Art of Etude series gives a window into how he thinks about technique, informed in part by physics concepts around string resonance.
