About

Raphaël Pichon's recording of Bach's B minor Mass winning Gramophone's Record of the Year in 2025 is perhaps the clearest sign of where he stands right now: at the very front of the early music world. The Paris born conductor and countertenor founded his period instrument ensemble Pygmalion in 2006 while still a student at the Paris Conservatory, and the group has been racking up critical praise ever since. Their 2008 Bach Missae Breves disc landed a golden Diapason and a Gramophone Editor's Choice, and the Bach Motets recording took the Opus Klassik award for choral work in 2021. Pichon has worked as a singer under heavyweights like Ton Koopman, Jordi Savall, and Gustav Leonhardt, and that experience as a performer clearly feeds into how he leads Pygmalion. The ensemble covers a wide stretch of repertoire, from Rameau operatic works like Dardanus and Castor et Pollux to Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, which drew strong reviews in 2023. He also runs the chamber choir OTrente, which tilts toward romantic and contemporary repertoire.
