About
French cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand has built a reputation for playing with what critics describe as transparency of sound, rhythmic precision and technical brilliance. She premiered Luciano Berio's Chanson pour Pierre Boulez in 2000, and Nicolas Bacri dedicated his Fourth Suite for cello solo to her, a sign of the respect she commands among composers. Henri Dutilleux was an early champion of her work. Her recordings, both as a soloist and alongside pianist Pascal Amoyel, have collected a string of serious accolades including the Cannes Classical Award, multiple Diapason d'Or prizes, and a Victoire de la musique classique in 2002. She has also been honoured as a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2005 she teamed up with Amoyel and director Jean Piat to create Block 15, a theatrical concert that pushed the cello well beyond the concert hall format.
