About
Kevin Atwater makes indie and dream pop music with a distinctly queer sensibility, describing his own sound as "folk with a queer twist". His confessional lyrics have a way of turning very specific personal experiences into something that feels universal, and critics have called his writing impressively concise and illustrative. He cites Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, Nick Drake's Pink Moon, Joni Mitchell, Adrianne Lenker, and Lomelda as touchstones, and you can hear that lineage in the intimacy of his recordings. He first broke through when his 2022 single "star tripping" went viral on TikTok, racking up two million views. His EP Downers Grove followed in 2023, later reimagined as a collaborative version featuring August Ponthier and Ella Jane. In March 2025 he released his debut album Achilles, built from songs written over several years, with "the cage" serving as its lead single. He is also noted for using alternative guitar tunings and writing in quintuple meter, little details that give his music an off kilter pull.
