About
Also known as: كنان العظمة
Syrian clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh has built a career that refuses to stay in one lane. Based in New York City, he moves fluidly between classical concert halls, jazz ensembles and world music projects, holding his own alongside the New York Philharmonic, Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and Daniel Barenboim's West Eastern Divan Orchestra. That Silk Road Ensemble collaboration earned a Grammy for the album Sing Me Home in 2017, while his own 2019 double CD Uneven Sky, featuring Yo Yo Ma and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, took home the Opus Klassik Award in Germany. His 2021 album Flow, recorded with the NDR Bigband in Hamburg, pushed further into jazz territory, with critics noting how his playing blends Arabic, classical and jazz elements so naturally that the boundaries dissolve. He also co founded the Syrian world fusion band Hewar and the ensemble Neolexica. In 2022 he premiered Songs for Days to Come, a musical theatre piece with texts drawn from contemporary Syrian poets, performed in Arabic by soprano Dima Orsho.
