About
Kit Downes plays piano, pipe organ and harmonium with a range of bands and collaborators, but it is his solo organ work that has become something of a signature. His 2018 ECM debut 'Obsidian' captures him exploring church organs across rural Suffolk and beyond, treating the instrument as a subject in itself: its mechanics, its disrepair, its capacity for extended technique. The record was conceived as a response to volcanicity, slow processes that trigger extreme change, and it shifts between written pieces and semi improvised ones with real purpose. He has worked with an impressively varied cast, from Squarepusher's live band to saxophonist Tom Challenger, cellist Lucy Railton and fiddle player Aidan O'Rourke. Commissions have come in from the Cologne Philharmonie, BBC Radio 3, the London Contemporary Orchestra and the Wellcome Trust among others. He holds a Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music and has picked up a BBC Jazz Award, a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Album, and a Mercury Prize nomination along the way.
