About

Newcastle's Knats have made a serious impression in a short time, with their second album A Great Day in Newcastle earning a Mercury Prize nomination in 2026. The trio of King David Ike Elechi on drums, Stan Woodward on bass, and Ferg Kilsby on trumpet are joined by George Johnson on saxophone and Sandro Shar on piano, building a sound that sits comfortably across jazz fusion, experimental jazz, and nu jazz. The cover of A Great Day in Newcastle is a nod to the iconic 1958 photograph A Great Day in Harlem, cheekily transplanting that sense of community and history to their home city. The band got their start playing rock covers and reggae before landing on jazz, eventually relocating to London to study at Trinity Laban. Their self titled debut dropped in 2025, and the follow up arrived just a year later with considerably more fanfare.
