Few bands carry the New York hardcore flag as hard as Madball. What started as a teenager grabbing the mic during Agnostic Front shows grew into one of the most enduring acts in the genre, with frontman Freddy Cricien steering the ship since the late 1980s. Their 1994 debut album Set It Off is considered a genuine classic, described as the band at their most menacing both musically and lyrically. From there they built a relentless touring reputation, sharing stages with Slayer and Black Sabbath and playing to crowds of 120,000 at festivals like Dynamo Open Air. Over the years Madball have put out nine studio albums, moving through labels like Roadrunner, Epitaph and Nuclear Blast while keeping their sound rooted in old school NYHC. Their 2018 album For the Cause is the latest chapter, proving they still hit just as hard. If beatdown hardcore and street level intensity are your thing, this is about as essential as it gets.
