About

Also known as: Maggie McNeal, Maggy MacNeal, Sjoukje Lucie van ’t Spijker, Sjoukje Smit

Few Dutch pop acts crossed over to the American charts the way Mouth & MacNeal did. Maggie MacNeal, born Sjoukje van 't Spijker in Tilburg, teamed up with Willem 'Big Mouth' Duyn in 1972 and the duo scored a top 10 hit in the US with 'How Do You Do', racking up silver, gold and platinum records along the way. They also represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 1974, finishing third with 'I See a Star'. After the duo split, MacNeal kept busy with a string of solo projects. She went back to Eurovision in 1980, this time as a solo act, and placed fifth with 'Amsterdam'. Her album Fools Together earned her an Edison award, and in 1991 she joined other Dutch artists on 'Shalom from Holland', recorded in solidarity with Israel during the Gulf War. From 2000 she became part of the Dutch Divas alongside Marga Bult, and she was still performing live as recently as 2023.
