The New York Times once described Mark Guiliana as 'a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed,' and it's easy to hear why. The New Jersey native sits at a genuinely rare crossroads of jazz fluency and electronic rhythm sensibility, drawing comparisons to hard bop legends Elvin Jones and Art Blakey while channeling the rhythmic thinking of J Dilla and Squarepusher. He leads his own Beat Music project and the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet, and his sideman resume runs deep, most notably appearing on David Bowie's final album Blackstar. His electric duo with Brad Mehldau, Mehliana, produced the album Taming the Dragon on Nonesuch, and Guiliana has toured across six continents with artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, Gretchen Parlato, Avishai Cohen and Dhafer Youssef. His album MARK earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2024 ceremony, a nod that feels long overdue for someone who has quietly shaped modern jazz drumming for two decades.
