Scottish singer songwriter Michael McGovern makes the kind of quietly devastating folk music that tends to find its audience slowly, then all at once. His second album Thin White Road contains the track Evelyn, which went viral and introduced him to a much wider crowd. In under three minutes, Evelyn manages to sketch a portrait of an unfulfilled life, a lost love, and dreams that never came to anything. It's a good example of what McGovern does best: sharp, economical storytelling set to fluid fingerpicking and a warm, unhurried vocal tone. Fans of Leonard Cohen and Ron Sexsmith will feel right at home.
