Miho Hazama wears a lot of hats, and she wears them all well. The Tokyo born, New York based composer and musician leads her own jazz ensemble, conducts major orchestras, and writes for everyone from saxophonists to full symphony orchestras. Her big band sound sits at the intersection of jazz composition and orchestral writing, a sensibility she sharpened at Manhattan School of Music and through years of work with groups like the Siena Wind Orchestra and the Metropole Orkest. Since 2019 she has served as chief conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band, a gig that has produced some of her most ambitious records, including a collaboration with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Her compositional reach extends far beyond jazz too: she has arranged for Ryuichi Sakamoto and even handled orchestration duties on an Evangelion film soundtrack. The 2024 release From Life Comes Beauty, featuring saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, shows she is still pushing her sound into new places.
