About
Mogwai have spent nearly three decades proving that you don't need lyrics to make music hit hard. The Glasgow post rock outfit built their reputation on long, sprawling instrumental pieces that drift from delicate melodic guitar work into walls of distortion, often within the same track. Their lineup has been remarkably stable, anchored by guitarist Stuart Braithwaite, bassist Dominic Aitchison, drummer Martin Bulloch, and multi instrumentalist Barry Burns, who first joined as a flautist before becoming a full member. Over ten albums they've pushed their sound into electronics, spacious arrangements, and even occasional vocals, landing their tenth record As the Love Continues at number one on the UK Albums Chart in February 2021. Along the way they've pulled in guest spots from the likes of Gruff Rhys and Gary Lightbody, released a 20 minute noise epic called "My Father My King", and collaborated with psych rock legend Roky Erickson. Creation Records founder Alan McGee once compared their album Mr Beast favourably to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, which tells you something about the weight Mogwai carry.
