About
Nate Smith is the kind of drummer who refuses to stay in one lane. The Virginia native built his reputation as a go to sideman, spending years in Dave Holland's quintet and lending his feel to records by Paul Simon, Brittany Howard, and Chris Potter, among many others. He co wrote and produced the Michael Jackson song Heaven Can Wait, and his work with the Vulfpeck offshoot The Fearless Flyers introduced him to a whole new audience hungry for tight, funky grooves. As a solo artist, Smith has steadily grown into a genuinely original voice. His 2025 cross genre album Live Action took home two Grammy Awards, one for Best Alternative Jazz Album and another for Best Arrangement on the track Big Fish, a collaboration with vocal group säje. That kind of recognition feels earned for someone who has been quietly doing exceptional work across jazz, funk, and beyond for well over a decade.
