About
Noura Mint Seymali carries one of Mauritania's most storied musical traditions into genuinely adventurous territory. A trained griot, she masters the ardin, a nine stringed harp reserved for women, and weaves it together with funk, rock, and psychedelic textures that owe as much to the desert as to any Western genre. Alongside her husband and guitarist Jeiche Ould Chighaly, who had custom electric guitars built to handle Arabic quarter tones, she has spent two decades blending Moorish music with pop in ways that fill festival stages from globalFEST in the US to Festival au Désert in Mali. Her 2014 album Tzenni landed on best of year lists at NPR and Het Parool, and her 2016 follow up Arbina hit number one on the World Music Charts Europe and earned a Songlines Music Award nomination. In 2018 she hosted the Tuareg band Tinariwen in Mauritania and appeared on their 2019 album Amadjar. Her 2025 album Yenbett topped both the World Music Charts Europe and the Transglobal Music Charts, the same year she won the WOMEX Artist Award.
