Few artists have shaped popular music the way Prince did. He practically invented the Minneapolis sound, a dense, funky fusion of rock, soul and R&B that made him unlike anyone else on the charts, and he did it while playing most of the instruments on his records himself. Purple Rain turned him into a phenomenon in 1984, the first time any artist had simultaneously held the number one spot in the US for film, album and single. Sign o' the Times followed in 1987 and is still regularly cited as one of the greatest albums ever made. His career was never straightforward. He famously changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in 1993 during a battle with Warner Bros., which earned him the nickname the Artist Formerly Known as Prince. He released 39 albums in his lifetime and reportedly left behind a vast vault of unreleased recordings. He died in April 2016 at his Paisley Park studio in Minnesota, leaving a catalogue that still sounds like nothing else.
