Few debut albums arrive with as much swagger as Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby. Released in 1987, it spawned four singles including the number one hit "Wishing Well" and the slow burning "Sign Your Name", and earned him a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance. The man behind it, born Terence Trent Howard in New York, blended soul, funk and pop with a flamboyant, androgynous charisma that made him impossible to ignore. He even told the press it was the most important album since Sgt. Pepper's, which, intentional provocation or not, got everyone talking. His follow up Neither Fish nor Flesh divided critics at the time but has since been reassessed as ambitious and ahead of its curve. Symphony or Damn peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart in 1993, and its closing track "Let Her Down Easy" was later covered by George Michael. In 2001 he legally changed his name to Sananda Maitreya and took full creative control through his own TreeHouse Publishing label, releasing a string of independent albums on his own terms ever since.
