Best known for her warm contralto voice and the kind of uplifting pop soul that defined a certain strain of the 1990s, Des'ree scored a string of hits that still get plenty of airplay. "You Gotta Be" was arguably her signature moment, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending nineteen months on the Billboard Recurrent Airplay Chart. It even got a second life in the UK after a Ford Focus ad brought it back into the top 10 in 1999. Then there was "Kissing You", the quietly devastating ballad she wrote for Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, performed on screen during the scene where DiCaprio and Danes' characters first lock eyes. Her 1994 album I Ain't Movin' sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide, and 1998's Supernatural hit the top 5 in Italy and the Netherlands. "Life", the lead single from that album, went to number 1 across Europe and Japan, though it also earned the dubious honour of "worst lyric in pop" in a BBC Radio 6 poll. After years away from music, she returned in 2019 with A Love Story, released on her own label Stargazer Records, earning four stars from MusicOMH.
