That unmistakable raspy voice is what most people clock first about Macy Gray, and it turned out to be her superpower. Born Natalie Renée McIntyre in Canton, Ohio, she built a sound soaked in soul and neo soul with a debt to Billie Holiday, and her 1999 single "I Try" put her on the map in a serious way. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, won her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and helped her debut album On How Life Is go triple platinum in the US and quadruple platinum in the UK. Since then she has kept busy across music and film, releasing ten studio albums and turning up in movies like Training Day, Spider Man, and Scary Movie 3. Her second album The Id featured John Frusciante and Erykah Badu, hit number one in the UK, and showed she was far more than a one hit story. She has sold over 25 million records worldwide and was inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2014.
