Few songs have had quite the second life that 'Murder on the Dancefloor' has enjoyed. Already Europe's most played track of 2002, it came roaring back after featuring in the 2023 film Saltburn and matched its original UK peak of number two all over again. Sophie Ellis Bextor's career has always had that kind of staying power: her 2001 debut Read My Lips went double platinum and sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, while her 2000 collab with DJ Spiller on 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)' hit number one in the UK and later became the country's biggest selling vinyl single of the millennium. Before going solo, Ellis Bextor was the voice of indie act theaudience in the late 1990s, which gives her pop catalogue a slightly unexpected edge. Her later albums explored folk influences on Wanderlust, Latin sounds on Familia, and Japanese inspired textures on Hana, all produced by Ed Harcourt and released on Cooking Vinyl. Her eighth studio album Perimenopop, out on Decca Records in 2025, landed to critical praise and showed she has absolutely no intention of standing still.
