About
Robert Owens is one of the rare male vocalists who carved out a lasting place in Chicago house music, most notably as a founding member of Fingers Inc. alongside producer Larry Heard and Ron Wilson. Their 1988 album Another Side and their singles helped define what the late 1980s golden era of house sounded like, and Owens brought a soulful, gospel rooted voice to a genre that rarely centred a man at the mic. His solo run delivered two number one hits on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, "I'll Be Your Friend" in 1992 and the Photek collaboration "Mine to Give" in 2000. Owens has never stayed in one corner. He lent his vocals to London Elektricity's Billion Dollar Gravy, appeared on Coldcut's Sound Mirrors track "Walk a Mile in My Shoes", and showed up on drum and bass producer Icicle's debut album Under the Ice in 2011. Whether it is house, drum and bass, or something in between, his voice tends to be the thing that ties a track together.
