About

Roomful of Teeth built their reputation on something genuinely unusual: eight classically trained singers diving deep into vocal traditions from across the globe, from Tuvan throat singing and Korean p'ansori to Georgian polyphony and Sardinian cantu a tenore. Founded in 2009 by Brad Wells and Caroline Shaw, the ensemble set out to create a new kind of vocal chamber music, and their self titled debut pulled it off convincingly enough to win a Grammy for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Shaw's piece Partita for 8 Voices, spread across that debut album, also earned her a Pulitzer Prize for Music. Their fourth studio album, Rough Magic, pushed things further by weaving in technology and instrumentation they started exploring during the pandemic years, including beta versions of Auto Tune software. The record earned them two more Grammy nominations and another win in the chamber music category. One highlight is Shaw's five part suite "The Isle", commissioned by the Folger Shakespeare Library and inspired by The Tempest. A movement from Partita also found a wider audience when it appeared in the 2022 film Tár.
