About

Caroline Shaw picked up the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 at just 30 years old, making her the youngest person ever to win it. The winning piece, Partita for 8 Voices, is an a cappella work built around baroque dance forms like Sarabande and Passacaglia, but it pushes far beyond traditional choral writing into whispers, sighs, murmurs and all kinds of unusual vocal textures. She co founded the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, which premiered and recorded the piece. Shaw wears several hats at once: she composes, sings with Roomful of Teeth, and plays violin with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble. Her range as a composer keeps expanding, from string quartets and harpsichord concertos to film and TV scores for projects like Madeline's Madeline and Fleishman Is in Trouble. Her album Narrow Sea earned her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2022, and Rectangles and Circumstance won her a second Grammy in 2025 for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.
