Rowwen Hèze from the tiny village of America in the Dutch province of Limburg have built one of the most unlikely success stories in Dutch music. Singing almost entirely in their local Limburgish dialect, a language most Dutch people can barely follow, they still managed to win fans across the whole country. Their breakthrough came with the Carnaval song "Niks stront niks", a track so controversial it triggered a local boycott, which of course only made more people curious. The band blends folk, Tex Mex, Irish influences and brass band sounds into something that feels completely their own, drawing inspiration from the likes of Los Lobos and The Pogues. Founded in 1985 and built around vocalist Jack Poels, they have put out a hefty catalogue of studio and live albums over the decades. They were also the first Dutch band to play the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, back in 1993. Their lyrics tend to stay grounded in everyday Limburgish life, covering hangovers, local characters, fatherhood and the village fanfare, which somehow makes them feel both deeply local and universally relatable.
