Sampa the Great, born Sampa Tembo in Zambia, has built one of the most compelling careers in Australian hip hop without ever sounding like she belongs to just one place. Her music pulls from hip hop, soul, jazz, gospel and reggae, and her second mixtape, Birds and the Bee9, caught enough ears to win the Australian Music Prize in 2018. She then became the first artist to win that prize twice when her debut album, The Return, took it again in 2020. Released via Ninja Tune in September 2019, The Return also peaked at No. 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart and swept several ARIA Awards including Best Hip Hop Release, Best Female Artist and Best Independent Release. The single "Final Form" was the first of those wins, though the moment was overshadowed when the awards broadcast cut to a commercial during her acceptance speech. Her second studio album, As Above, So Below, followed in September 2022, made after she relocated back to Zambia.
