Few Scottish punk bands managed to bridge the raw energy of late 1970s punk and the more polished new wave sound quite like Skids. Formed in Dunfermline in 1977, they broke through with "Into the Valley", a top 10 UK hit in 1979 that remains their signature track. Their debut album Scared to Dance followed the same year, and though recording it was famously turbulent, with guitarist Stuart Adamson walking out before all his overdubs were done, the result was a sharp, urgent record. "The Saints Are Coming" from that album was later covered by U2 and Green Day as a charity single in 2006. Skids kept the momentum going with Days in Europa and then The Absolute Game in 1980, their most commercially successful record, which cracked the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. The band dissolved in 1982, with Adamson going on to found Big Country and singer Richard Jobson carving out a varied career as a poet, TV presenter and film director. In 2016 Jobson and the band announced a 40th anniversary UK tour.
