About
Slapstick may have only been active for a few years in the mid 1990s, but the Elgin, Illinois punk ska band left a legacy that far outlasted their short run. Drawing on Operation Ivy and the raw vocal energy of Crimpshrine, they built a sharp, propulsive sound that earned them a devoted following in the Chicago scene. Their releases include the album Lookit! on Asian Man Records and a self titled discography compilation that pulled together their EPs, unreleased cuts, and six songs originally meant for a 10 inch record. What makes Slapstick genuinely fascinating is what came after. Their members went on to form Alkaline Trio, the Lawrence Arms, the Broadways, and a string of other bands that became the backbone of Chicago punk, a lineage fans call the Slapstick Family Tree. The band itself has reunited several times over the years, including a memorable hour long set at the Asian Man Records 15th Anniversary Festival, where they cheerfully admitted they never really liked ska all that much to begin with.
