About
Softcult are a Canadian twin duo from Ontario who blend grunge, shoegaze and dream pop into something that feels both abrasive and dreamy at once. Phoenix and Mercedes Arn Horn built the project on a firmly DIY ethos rooted in 1990s riot grrrl culture, citing Bikini Kill and Bratmobile alongside shoegaze heavyweights like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive as core touchstones. Their sound has sharpened across four EPs, with See You in the Dark earning a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year in 2024, and Heaven drawing on Deftones and Swervedriver for a heavier, more textured edge. Beyond the music, Softcult run a monthly zine called SCripture, a black and white publication tackling environmental, social and political topics that ties directly into the themes of their songs. The name Softcult itself reflects that social commentary angle, referencing the unquestioning loyalty people give to their communities. Their debut full length album, When a Flower Doesn't Grow, arrived in early 2026.
