Spanish Love Songs have built their reputation on a kind of brutal emotional honesty that sits somewhere between the raw punch of Jawbreaker and the melodic heart of early emo. The Los Angeles five piece formed in 2013 and have put out four studio albums, moving from their self released debut Giant Sings the Blues through to Schmaltz, the widely loved Brave Faces Everyone, and their 2023 record No Joy. They even call their sound "grouchrock", which honestly fits: it is punk rock with feelings right on the surface, no pretense about it. Brave Faces Everyone was a real turning point, charting on the Vinyl Albums chart and pulling in a UK run with the Menzingers. The band followed it up with Brave Faces Etc., a full reimagining of that album, plus a steady stream of covers ranging from Phoebe Bridgers to Blink 182 to Alkaline Trio. The lineup is anchored by vocalist and guitarist Dylan Slocum and keyboardist Meredith Van Woert, who are also married, giving the band a tight core that shows in the music.
