About
The Sports were one of those Australian bands that seemed to have everything figured out early. Their debut EP, Fair Game, landed on NME's Record of the Week in 1977 before the band had even released a full album, and the comparisons came fast: Stephen Cummings drawing parallels to Mick Jagger, the guitar work earning nods to Little Feat. Their sound sat somewhere between British pub rock and new wave, punchy and melodic with a rockabilly undertow. They hit their commercial stride with the album Don't Throw Stones in 1979, which cracked the Australian top ten and gave them their only US chart entry with 'Who Listens to the Radio'. They opened for Graham Parker in both Australia and the UK, and once supported Thin Lizzy in front of an estimated 100,000 people at Sydney Opera House. Two more albums followed before they called it quits in 1981, and Don't Throw Stones was later included in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.
